Words to Fibre Books

An exploration of unique book forms to complement individual themes, using
felting techniques, digital image transfer, and surface treatments. You can
create your own personal journal or memento of a special occasion or event, a
memorable experience, or a reminder of someone special. Alternatively, you can
create an illustrated fibre book that reveals the story of a chosen text or
favourite poem as the 'pages' are turned (or opened out), or explore a chosen
theme - freed from the conventions of rectangular paper and card formats, by
using a mixed-media approach.
Requirement:
I will provide all necessary felting equipment, as I have enough for 20, and I
will have a selection of additional materials for colouring and surface
treatments should they be needed for a minimal charge (approx. £2 - £3 cover
charge, depending on the amount used). I will also have 2 laptops and 2 inkjet
printers, and special papers for printing images which can be transferred on to
fabrics and felts. (Special papers will cost £2 each per A4 sheet, including
ink). If you do not wish to use special transfer papers, pictures printed on to
good quality paper (not photographs) can be used.
What needs to be brought with you:
- White Merino 'Tops for making pages + any additional
colours for your chosen subject
- Images for your project (preferably, ready to scan on
to special paper). Alternatively, you can print images on to 'T-shirt'
printing paper, and bring them to the workshop ready for use. If you do
this, remember to reverse your image before you print on to the paper in
your printer at home.
- Paper (for trying out ideas), scissors, sellotape,
glue, pens and pencils
- A selection of light-coloured fabrics, papers for your
project
- White open-weave fabric for use with 'T-shirt' printing
papers, e.g. scrim, cheesecloth, silk chiffon
- Permanent fibre-tip pens for drawing and writing on
pages
- Roll of Baking Parchment (not greaseproof paper)
- Spray-on Permanent Adhesive
- (optional) Hand-sewing equipment, and embroidery
threads
- Any additional bits and pieces for finishing touches
In order to fit everything into 2 days, we will have to work
quickly, and the more folk can have prepared beforehand, the easier it will be.
I will therefore introduce the workshop by showing actual examples to explain
the different approaches to planning their projects. After which, we will go
straight into the planning on paper, followed by the making up of their 'books',
according to the types of printing papers to be used. While this is going on,
those needing to transfer their images on to special paper can do so using the
laptops and inkjet printers. After that it is a question of assembling
everything together and finishing off.
